Located in a prime, but previously underused, 1.7 acre public open space in front of Camden, New Jersey’s City Hall, Roosevelt Plaza Park was transformed into a vibrant civic space as part of a creative placemaking experiment. In 2014, Roosevelt Plaza Park’s first pop-up installation, the design brought flexible seating, shade, flowers and art to a once undesirable space. With the use of inexpensive elements and iterative placemaking techniques, RPP was transformed with colorful, interactive light elements in Year 1 and then into a series of green, rainwater collection towers for Year 2. The installations brought enormous positive feedback from a very diverse user group. Building on the success and based upon data collection, surveys, and community input from the first two initial installations, Year 3 added a new spin, providing a health and wellness theme to the park. Each installation transformed the park into a dynamic and exciting place to go. The iterative placemaking experiment at RPP continues to build momentum and change perceptions about downtown Camden.
